Project

The Pork Industry Handbook project is a continuing educational effort to provide pork producers with up-to-date information on all phases of pork production and marketing. It was initially approved and funded by the Extension Service-USDA from 1975 to 1980. The project now is funded by the State Cooperative Extension Services.

The project is truly a national effort with more than 725 authors and reviewers involved in the production of fact sheets. About 45 states representing approximately 99 percent of the pork production in the United States are using all or some of the fact sheets.


Objectives

    To improve the quality and availability of educational materials with more uniformity in recommendations for the pork industry.

    To strengthen individually owned farms and to provide for the wise use of resources in the production of pork.

    To increase the efficient use of extension specialist's time by lessening the amount of duplication in many swine subject matter publications.

    To provide for more efficient and economical distribution of technical information and to recognize and identify voids in research.


Handbook Sections

The Pork Industry Handbook contains the following subject matter areas for which fact sheets are available.

Handbook Fact Sheets

A Handbook Advisory Committee guides the development of the handbook and selects topics for fact sheets.

Authors also are chosen, generally more than one for each fact sheet.

One or more reviewers are assigned and consulted. They evaluate the fact sheets and are credited for review in the publication. Fact sheets also are reviewed by this committee.

The goal is to maintain a handbook that is current by the addition of new fact sheets and the revision of others.
